Why I Rise – The Story of how Stephan Barrett Founded Rise

Passion, design, results. Those three words embody why I built Rise.

Passion
I love what I do. It's not easy, but I love solving complex interactive challenges and building brands. It's the perfect mix of marketing, design and technology that I can't get enough of. I read articles about business on my free time. I buy at least 3 design, web and business books a month—more than I have time to read. I'm addicted. Is there some sort of balance I'm missing? I don't know, though I'm perfectly happy being completely absorbed.

Design
I get a rush out of taking complex ideas and making simple, elegant interfaces and applications. I usually figure out an answer to an interactive challenge before my client finishes their sentence. This goes back to the days when I was 10 and my family picked up our first computer. A x286 screamer. I think it had 2MB of storage space, or something crazy like that. We had a 2400 baud modem and I found BBSes (Bulletin Board Systems) and started playing Trade Wars. My mind was captured by this digital world I could log into and explore what other people offered. Being 10 I didn't jump talk with anyone online, but I saw that the possibilities were endless! I saw how teams could create virtual "worlds" for others to experience. I must have been destined to be a web designer.

Results
I love to move the needle because that's where it counts the most! The most fun is when you can test, optimize and measure growth. Results today mean relationships and quantifying those have been tough work to say the least. No matter what you're trying to measure, with the right attitude and passion for what you do, you'll gain results. Sometimes results are tough. At times I don't get the results I want. It's tough to dust yourself off and keep going. But you have to fail fast to grow and feel like you're really moving.

Rise allows me to experience all of things in one place and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Rise above...
