When I'm passionate about something, it's the only thing I want to talk about and I can talk about something for a very long time. For example, I've been talking about Transmedia since 2003. Granted, we weren't calling it "Transmedia" back then, but that's another story.
Transmedia is an emerging genre on the web that is gaining a lot of popularity and includes mediums like Alternate Reality Gaming or ARG, Interactive Storytelling, and Viral Marketing. A full transmedia production takes a story and weaves it through two or more different mediums ranging from:
- Websites
- Social media outlets
- Phone
- Real world events and locations
One of the major strengths of this form is that it gives users the power to put together the story themselves and users are often able to interact or contribute to the story as it’s being told.
The resulting sense of agency (SA) that players feel from these kinds of experiences is HUGE. When I design anything that's interactive, I try to give my players as much power as possible and in general, I give them more power/control than most other designers think is even possible.
So why do I love Transmedia so much? Aside from the fact that it's an especially cool medium, it's the same reason why I love social media, Rise, storytelling, and everything else that I talk about nonstop…it's all about the relationships you can build. Player to player, player to brand, brand to brand. If the best relationships are built on trust, then trusting your players to join you in the creation process is one of the best ways I can think of to build long-lasting relationships.
So that's my elevator pitch about Transmedia. Whether your story is your personal memoir, the history behind your business, or a promotion for your next movie or creative venture, I'd be delighted to talk about how this medium can be applied to you and your customer base.
